barrier vs hydration, they're not the same thing

I know we talk about drinking water constantly and yes fine, it matters. But honestly what's been making an actual difference for my skin this summer is less about how much water I'm drinking and more about whether my skin can hold onto moisture at all. I'm not a dermatologist but there's a real difference between putting hydration in and keeping it there. Like I had a patch in July where I was chugging water, eating well, the whole thing — and my skin still felt tight and looked a bit dull by the afternoon. Took me a while to realise I'd switched to a lighter moisturiser for summer (because everyone says to go lighter, right) and basically stripped out anything occlusive. My barrier was just... not doing its job. Added a thin layer of something more sealing on top of my usual routine and the difference within a few days was noticeable. Not dramatic, just — less tight, more normal-looking. Summer heat genuinely changes what your skin needs and I think I underestimate that every single year without fail.

yeah the barrier thing took me ages to actually understand, drinking more water wasn't doing much when my skin just couldn't hold onto it

same, took me a while too — it's not really my area but makes sense as a concept
